  21. QUESTION:  Please provide me with some advice about my problem.  I have grainy
  22. eyelids.  My eyes are watery in the morning upon awakening.  There is also
  23. some mucous in the corners.  The lids are red and swollen.  I will appreciate
  24. any information you can give me.  Thank you.

  28. ANSWER:  Your letter quite clearly describes a condition known as
  29. "blepharitis," but since there are two major types of this condition I can't
  30. be more specific.  The first, and more serious, is ulcerative blepharitis,
  31. caused by a bacterial infection.  Staphylococcus is the most common bacteria,
  32. and the condition will require treatment with prescription antibiotics.  It is
  33. not clear what causes non-ulcerative blepharitis, which may be due to allergy
  34. or associated with a seborrheic condition of the face and scalp.  In either
  35. case, the condition has a tendency to recur frequently.  The ulcerative type
  36. may result in scarring of the lids and loss of eyelashes.  Warm compresses are
  37. used in the morning to help clear away the secretions or crusts, after which
  38. the medications in drop or ointment form are applied.  You must be diligent
  39. and patient if you are going to be successful in combatting this common
  40. ailment.
